Tata Indian Institute of Skills (Tata IIS) is an Indian Section 8 company established as a public–private partnership between the Tata Education and Development Trust (TEDT) — an arm of Tata Trusts — and the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) of the Government of India."Tata Indian Institute of Skills (TIIS)". Tata Trusts. Retrieved 2026-06-26. The institution was formed to bridge the gap between industry demand and the supply of job-ready skilled workers in India, with a focus on advanced manufacturing, emerging technologies, and service-sector vocations.

Tata IIS operates as a special-purpose vehicle that manages two campuses: the Indian Institute of Skills, Ahmedabad (IIS Ahmedabad) and the Indian Institute of Skills, Mumbai (IIS Mumbai)."About Tata IIS". Tata IIS. Retrieved 2026-06-26. The organisation is modelled on the globally recognised Institute of Technical Education (ITE) of Singapore, and aims to set a new benchmark for vocational education in India."Best Skill Development Institute India". Tata IIS. Retrieved 2026-06-26.

Background and history

[edit]

India's workforce development challenge is significant: despite being the world's most populous country, a large proportion of its youth enters the labour market without industry-relevant skills. The Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship has identified advanced manufacturing as a sector facing critical talent shortages, prompting the Government of India to seek private-sector collaboration in building world-class vocational institutes."Tata Indian Institute of Skills Opens Registrations for National Skills Test (NST)". Business Standard / ANI. 22 June 2026. Retrieved 2026-06-26.

Tata IIS was incorporated as a Section 8 (non-profit) company. The Tata Education and Development Trust, an arm of the wider Tata Trusts philanthropy, is the primary institutional anchor. Additional support for the Ahmedabad campus was extended by the Government of Gujarat."IIS Ahmedabad". IIS Ahmedabad. Retrieved 2026-06-26.

This initiative is consistent with a long tradition of Tata Group institution-building in India, which includes the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) (1909), the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) (1936), and the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) (1945)."IIS Ahmedabad – Tata Legacy". IIS Ahmedabad. Retrieved 2026-06-26.

Organisational structure

[edit]

Tata IIS is constituted as a Section 8 company under the Companies Act, 2013. Its governance is overseen by a board including representatives from the Tata Group and MSDE. Venu Srinivasan, former Chairman of TVS Motor Company, serves as the Non-Executive Chairman of Tata IIS."About Tata IIS". Tata IIS.
