History
[edit]Tab for a cause was created in 2012 by Alex Groth and Kevin Jennison. According to Alex in an interview with the websight Causeartist the idea for Tab for a cause happened quote
“When we were in college and opening hundreds of new tabs every day. We had seen through YouTube that online ads were generating real revenue, and at that time the new tab page was just a blank white screen.
We thought it would be interesting to place a few ads on that page and send the revenue to charity.
That simple idea grew into what is now Tab for a Cause.”[3]
Features
[edit]The tab for a cause browser extension has several customizable settings these are
On the homepage
[edit]A Clock in the middle of the screen that can tell time in the 12 or 24 hour format
A Notes taking feature on the top left of the screen
A To-Do feature on the top left of the screen
A Bookmark feature on the top left of the screen that lets you pin your most visited apps
In the settings
[edit]A Background changing feature that lets your background be any picture online
A Search engine changing feature that lets your search engine be any one supported by tab that is currently google bing duckduckgo ecosia and search for a cause
How it works
[edit]Tab for a cause uses a points base system to allocate its money to charity according to the article You Could Be Donating to Charity Every Time You Open a New Tab by the website Mental Floss “When you use the site to navigate to websites, Tab for a Cause earns money from their advertisers (there are two ads on the bottom right-hand corner of the website). The company then funnels a portion of that money to a pre-selected group of nonprofits. With the help of those few extra ads, each tab you open raises between 1/10 and 1/3 of a cent for charity.” now in order to get points you can do a variety of different activities those are listed in the table below
| Activity | Hearts (points) gained |
|---|---|
| Open a new tab | 1 Heart per Tab |
| Watch a video add | 100 Hearts per Day |
| Recrute someone to use tab | 350 Hearts per Person |
Current charities
[edit]Tab for a cause has as of 2026 a total of 24 different charities you can donate to split between 10 charities that donate to specific organisations (such as save the children or human rights watch) and 14 different tabs and betas that donate your hearts to specific causes for example Help End Hunger (Beta) gives all of your hearts to organisations that help end world hunger. All current charities can be seen in the picture below.
Its also importent to know that you can chose how many hearts you want to give as quoted by the Los Angels Times "Tab for a Cause works with Educate, Water.org, Room to Read, Human Rights Watch, Conservation International, International Peace Institute and Save the Children. Depending on how you’ve prioritized your causes, Tab for a Cause will donate the money you generate to the appropriate charity."[4]
