Suman Kumar

[edit]

Suman Kumar[1] is an Indian screenwriter, director, author, and standup comedian. He is best known for writing and developing the acclaimed streaming television series The Family Man for Amazon Prime Video[2], created by Raj & DK[3][4]. With a career spanning over a decade, Kumar has worked across books, films, television and stand‑up comedy[5] in the Indian entertainment industry.

Career

[edit]

Suman Kumar was born in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, and grew up in Chittoor in present‑day Andhra Pradesh.

In late 2010, Suman quit his corporate career and wrote his first novel, Ranga Half‑Pants, marking his transition from IT professional to full‑time writer.

Suman’s debut novel Ranga Half‑Pants[6] was published by Jaico Books in 2016. Set in a small town in Andhra Pradesh in 1986, the book is a coming‑of‑age story about a schoolboy and has been noted by reviewers for its humour and nostalgic detail.

In 2015, he wrote the screenplay for an episode of the & TV horror anthology Darr Sabko Lagta Hai[7], marking one of his early television credits. He later contributed additional story to the Hindi action‑comedy film A Gentleman (2017)[8] for Fox Star Studios and served as script consultant on the horror‑comedy Stree (2018)[9], produced by Maddock Films and Raj & DK’s D2R Films.

Kumar worked as content head at Chennai‑based YNot Studios, where he was involved in developing the Tamil and Telugu thriller Game Over (2019)[10] and the Tamil films Aelay (2021)[11] and Mandela (2021)[12], which received critical praise. Since 2019, he has been part of the core writing team on the Amazon Prime Video thriller series The Family Man[2], which has been acclaimed for its mix of action, humour and socio‑political commentary.

He also co‑wrote and developed Raj & DK’s Netflix crime‑comedy series Guns & Gulaabs (2023)[13], noted for its 1990s setting and genre‑bending tone, and was a writer on the crime thriller series Farzi (2023)[14], starring Shahid Kapoor and Vijay Sethupathi, for Amazon Prime Video.

Kumar made his feature directorial debut with the Tamil comedy‑drama Raghu Thatha (2024)[15], produced by Hombale Films and starring Keerthy Suresh. In 2025 he co‑wrote the Tamil sports‑drama / psychological thriller Test,[16] featuring R. Madhavan, Nayanthara and Siddharth, which later premiered on Netflix. He has also directed episodes of The Family Man[2] Season 3.
