Draft:Sparsh Hospice

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sparsh Hospice is a charitable palliative care and hospice centre in Hyderabad, Telangana, India, providing free end-of-life care to people with terminal and other life-limiting illnesses.[1] Established in 2011 as a project of the Rotary Club of Banjara Hills Charitable Trust, it grew from a small unit in Banjara Hills into an 82-bed facility at Khajaguda, and delivers inpatient, home-based, and outpatient care at no cost to patients and their families.[1]

History

[edit]

Sparsh Hospice was founded in 2011 as an initiative of the Rotary Club of Banjara Hills Charitable Trust, beginning at a facility in the Banjara Hills area of Hyderabad.[1] On 4 September 2021, an 82-bed facility at Khajaguda was inaugurated by K. T. Rama Rao, then Minister for Municipal Administration and Urban Development.[1] The 60,000-square-foot centre was built on 1.1 acres of land leased by the state government, at a cost of ₹15 crore funded by corporate and individual donors.[1]

Facility and services

[edit]

Palliative care at Sparsh Hospice involves physical, emotional, and spiritual care delivered by a team of doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, counsellors, and spiritual guides, and the hospice also operates a home-care service.[1] All services are provided free of charge.[1] The centre is designed to serve up to 82 inpatients, 150 home-care patients, and 50 outpatients.[1]

Beyond care to terminally ill cancer patients, the hospice provides for patients with other life-limiting conditions, with dedicated dementia and Parkinson's, geriatric, and paediatric wards; about 20% of beds are reserved for these illnesses.[1] The facility includes paediatric palliative care, a physiotherapy room, pharmacy, and mortuary, among other amenities.[1]

At the 2021 inauguration, the hospice's chief anaesthetist, M. Subrahmanyam, described palliative care as the management of suffering around an illness, such as loss of appetite, weakness, and vomiting, rather than treatment of the underlying disease.[1] He stated that of the roughly 1.4 million people who develop cancer in India each year, about 60% need palliative care while only an estimated 2% receive it.[1]

Living Will Clinic

[edit]

In October 2025, coinciding with World Hospice and Palliative Care Day, Sparsh Hospice inaugurated a Living Will Clinic in Hyderabad to help patients create legally recognised advance directives documenting their end-of-life care preferences, for use in situations where they can no longer express their wishes.[2][3] The clinic offers consultations, legal assistance, and counselling, and is staffed by palliative care physicians, psychologists, and professionals trained in advance care planning; it also provides follow-up support to ensure each directive is documented, witnessed, and accessible to treating medical teams.[2] Telangana Today described it as the first dedicated advance-care-planning facility of its kind in South India.[3]

Public engagement

[edit]

In June 2025, Sparsh Hospice launched "Guardian of Sparsh", a programme to enrol recurring monthly donors to support its free-care services.[4] In August 2023, it collaborated with L&T Metro Rail (Hyderabad) on a palliative-care awareness event at a Hyderabad metro station.[5]

Recognition

[edit]

In June 2022, Sparsh Hospice received the Spirit of Humanity Award in the Health category from the Americares India Foundation, presented at the foundation's eleventh annual awards ceremony in Mumbai.[6]
