Reflejo is a U.S.-based Christian nonprofit organization that mobilizes and supports Latin American missionaries serving in cross-cultural contexts, particularly among unreached populations.[1]

History

Reflejo was founded in 2020 by Dave Matthews in response to structural gaps in missionary sending within Latin America.[2] According to a 2024 article by Novo, many Latin American Christians who felt called to cross-cultural missions were unable to pursue that calling due to limited access to training, funding, and sending organizations. [3]

The same source describes a growing interest in missions across Latin America but notes that “those who feel called usually feel stuck,” highlighting the lack of established infrastructure to support and send workers internationally.[4]

According to Novo, Reflejo was established to address this gap by creating pathways for Latin American missionaries to serve in regions that are often difficult to access.[5]

Reflejo and its founder have also been mentioned in publications by COMIBAM Internacional, a Latin American missions network.[6]

Mission and activities

Reflejo functions as a missionary sending agency focused on candidates from Latin America. Mission Network News describes the organization as helping “Spanish [and] Portuguese speakers from Central and South America… go to the unreached… [and] hard to reach places.”[7]

The organization’s activities include missionary training, mobilization, and placement, along with ongoing support for workers and collaboration with sending churches.[8] Programs reported in nonprofit disclosures include pastoral care for ministry leaders, mentorship for emerging workers, and coaching for churches engaged in global missions. [9]

Reflejo is listed by MinistryWatch and is a member of the Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability (ECFA).[10] [11]

Reflejo and its work in mobilizing Latin American missionaries has also been discussed in mission-focused media, including podcast interviews addressing the role of Latinos in cross-cultural missions.[12]

Context in global missions

Reflejo operates within a broader shift in global Christianity. Mission Network News reports that although a majority of Christians now live in the Global South, most missionaries are still sent from North America and Europe.[13] Within this context, Latin American Christians are described as “uniquely positioned” for cross-cultural mission work, particularly in regions where Western missionaries may face cultural or political barriers.[14]

The Outreach Foundation has reported on partnerships involving Reflejo, including collaboration with churches in Latin America and cross-cultural missionary initiatives.[15]

Additional coverage from Missions Catalyst similarly discusses Reflejo in the context of increasing participation of Latin American Christians in global missions.[16]

Structure and recognition

Reflejo is registered as a nonprofit organization in the United States and files annual tax documentation.[17] Its GuideStar profile describes the organization as “a consortium of missionaries” supporting ministry leaders and churches engaged in global mission. [18]

The organization is also listed as a member of Missio Nexus, a network of mission agencies and churches engaged in global missions collaboration.[19]
