History

[edit]

The Adjustable Clamp company was founded in Chicago, Illinois in 1903 by Adele Holman, a former female opera singer. She envisioned a company growing through product innovation, good customer service, and woodworking tools with superior performance. Adele partnered with Hans Jorgensen, a cabinet maker from Denmark, and Marcus Russ, a local tool salesman, to create the company. Shortly after the company's founding, Adele patented the woodworking clamp.[2]

By 1914, both Hans Jorgensen and Marcus Russ left the company, making Adele the sole owner, which was unheard of at the time. [3]

In 1923, the company expanded and introduced a new line of clamps under the brand "Pony." This new brand would originally focus on making clamps for smaller, lighter duty tasks, but later turn into a brand staple in woodworking shops around the country.[4] Along with this addition, the company continued to expand the Jorgensen brand lineup.

In 2013, Adjustable Clamp Company rebranded to Pony Tools Inc. The rebrand was the result of a new management team wanting to focus on brand recognition and product expansion.[5]

On May 19, 2016, Pony Tools Inc. suspended operations at its Chicago manufacturing facility abruptly. Company chairman Doug Holman, the heir to Adele Holman, said the closure was caused by "issues unique to the Chicago business." This closure ended over a century of local manufacturing.[6]

On May 9, 2017, Hangzhou GreatStar Industrial announced it had acquired Pony Tool's assets and would restart production. The company would change its name from Pony Tools Inc. to Pony Jorgensen and would operate as a subsidiary of Arrow Fastener.[7] Bill Sokol, vice-president of marketing at Pony Jorgensen, announced that new clamps would no longer be manufactured at the original Chicago factory, but instead at a GreatStar factory in China. Sokol stated that the move wasn't driven by cost, but was instead a strategic move that aims to focus on quality.[8]

In 2018, production for both Pony Jorgensen and sister company Goldblatt restarted, with products in stores by mid-2018.[9]

Availabilty

[edit]

Before the GreatStar acquisition, Pony and Jorgensen clamps could be found at woodworking specialty shops and home improvement retailers like The Home Depot.[9]

Now, Pony Jorgensen products can be found online through the Arrow Fastener website and Amazon, along with in-store at Lowe's.[10]
