History
[edit]Development
[edit]In October 2019, Sal Romano reported for Gematsu that Sony Interactive Entertainment had filed trademark applications for the PlayStation 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10 in Japan.[1] In response to Microsoft's planned purchase of Warner Bros. Games and Activision Blizzard, the Competition and Markets Authority in the United States had released a redacted confidential document with input from Sony that stated the next generation of console would not be released until after 2027.[2]
In a YouTube video uploaded in October 2025, Mark Cerny—lead architect on the PlayStation 5—and Jack Huynh from AMD discussed advancements in graphics technology related to the PlayStation 6; Sony and AMD were said to be collaborating on allowing future graphics processing units to handle upscaled graphics, ray tracing, and path tracing more easily.[3] An Internet leak from later that month revealed internal documents that stated the console would begin being manufactured in mid-2027.[4]
In January 2026, senior analyst David Gibson stated that he expected the lifespan of the PlayStation 5 to be extended while the PlayStation 6 would likely "be delayed longer than many expected".[5] By May, because of the 2024–present global memory supply shortage, the price and release date for the PlayStation 6 had not yet been decided. Sony Group Corporation president and CEO Hiroki Totoki, expecting the shortage to continue into 2027, stated Sony will consider new ways to sell the console and how to reduce hardware costs, which includes "think about various simulations, including changing business models to come up with the best solution and strategy."[6][7]
