Momio is a social media service and mobile application aimed at children, developed by the Danish company Momio ApS (formerly watAgame).[1] Described in the press as a "Facebook for children", it is designed for children aged 7–13 and is intended for users under 18.[2][3][4] Users communicate with one another and share pictures and videos using avatars rather than their real names.[2][5]
History
[edit]The service and its app were developed by watAgame, an interactive media company based in Copenhagen, Denmark.[1][2] The company rebranded as Momio ApS in February 2017.[1] Momio launched in Finland in March 2014, having previously been available in Denmark, and was subsequently released across Northern Europe.[2]
Features
[edit]On Momio, users create and style a virtual avatar (a "momio"), decorate a virtual room, message other users, add friends, care for a virtual pet (an "animo"), receive a daily free gift, and take part in competitions and polls.[5][6] Users participate through usernames and avatars rather than their real names and photographs.[2]
Safety and moderation
[edit]Because its users are young, Momio places a strong emphasis on online safety. According to the European Commission's Better Internet for Kids portal, all content on Momio is moderated in real time, and the service is closed at night, typically from 23:00 to 05:00.[5] The service uses automated word-filtering that flags certain words used in conversations, alongside human moderation.[2] Momio uses an artificial-intelligence moderation tool from the Finnish company Utopia Analytics to help review messages in multiple languages.[7] Momio provides dedicated safety information for parents on its website.[8] The Mannerheim League for Child Welfare lists Momio among social media services relevant to children and families.[9]
Commentators have noted that no child-focused service can fully remove risk. In 2014, Tommi Tossavainen of Finland's National Audiovisual Institute cautioned that, despite monitoring, the possibility of unwanted contact from adults persists, and advised that parents familiarise themselves with such services.[2]
Reach
[edit]According to Momio, the service had approximately 80,000 monthly active users and around 18 million registered accounts worldwide as of 2026.[10]
