Mingming "Stephanie" Yin (殷明明; born 1990) is a Chinese–American professional Go player, commentator, and educator.[1] She is the founder of the New York Institute of Go (NYIG) and has provided English-language commentary at international events, including the 2017 Future of Go Summit.[2] She has led public outreach programs at North American institutions, including the University of Minnesota and the Museum of Chinese in America.[3][4] In 2022–2023, Yin served as a professional-in-residence at the London Go Centre, documented by the British Go Journal.[5]

Early life and education

Yin was born in Anqing, Anhui Province, China, in 1990.[6] She began learning Go at the age of seven and later trained at the Nie Weiping Go Dojo in Beijing.[7][8] In 2007 she qualified as a professional 1-dan player certified by the Chinese Weiqi Association.[3]

After a period on China’s professional circuit, Yin moved to the United States in 2010 to pursue higher education. She majored in finance and business administration at Fordham University in New York City and worked in finance after graduation.[1]

Career

Yin founded the New York Institute of Go (NYIG) in New York City, where she teaches and organizes outreach activities.[1] In 2012, Yin presented at the International Go Symposium; recordings list her session “Experiences in Growing Up in the Profession and Observations on the Chinese Methods of Education.”[9][10] She has provided English-language commentary for major events, including the 2017 Future of Go Summit in Wuzhen.[2] Independent club pages also noted public viewing sessions for Summit coverage.[11]

In 2022–2023, Yin served as a professional-in-residence at the London Go Centre, documented by the British Go Journal.[5] She has also led public programs at institutions such as the University of Minnesota China Center and the Museum of Chinese in America.[3][4]

New York Institute of Go

In 2016 Yin founded the New York Institute of Go, a school offering structured Go programs for children and adults in the New York metropolitan area.[1] In December 2017 she organised the second New York Youth Team Tournament and a North American collegiate team event; these activities were reported by Chinese-language media.[12]

Commentary and media work

During the 2017 Future of Go Summit in Wuzhen, Yin appeared as an English-language commentator alongside Michael Redmond and Hajin Lee.[2] She has also appeared on AGA broadcasts during the U.S. Go Congress and other events.[13]

American Go Association

Yin has served in leadership and outreach roles within the American Go Association (AGA).[14]

International outreach

Yin has spoken on Go education and outreach at public forums, including the World Youth Go Forum in Quzhou, China.[15] Yin spoke at the 2023 World Youth Go Forum in Quzhou, China, where she participated alongside representatives of international Go organizations.[16]
