The Michigan Notable Book award is an annual literary award presented by the Library of Michigan for the top 20 most notable books written about Michigan or the Great Lakes , by Michigan residents, or set in Michigan or the Great Lakes.[ 1] [ 2] [ 3] Winners are decided by a committee of booksellers, librarians, and reviewers from the Library of Michigan.[ 4]
The program began as "Read Michigan" in 1991 as part of the Michigan week celebrations,[ 5] and was changed to "Michigan Notable Books" in 2004.[ 1] To be available for nomination, the book must have been published in the year prior to the award.[ 3] Books can include and have historically included poetry, fiction, children's books, cookbooks, biographies, and graphic novels, and short story collections.[ 3] Recipients of the award are selected to best amplify Michigan's cultural heritage.[ 3]
Winning authors are honored at an annual reception at the Library of Michigan called the 'Night for Notables' and travel to libraries across Michigan on a Notable Books Tour.[ 2] [ 3] As of 2024, it was sponsored by the Library of Michigan Foundation, Michigan Center for the Book, and Michigan humanities.[ 3]
