Meandrina jacksoni is a species of stony coral in the family Meandrinidae. It was described in 2011 as distinct from the closely related maze coral (Meandrina meandrites) using morphological and genetic characters.[1]
Taxonomy
[edit]Meandrina jacksoni was first described by Jorge H. Pinzón and Ernesto Weil in 2011 as part of a multidisciplinary taxonomic study of the Caribbean genus Meandrina.[2]
Prior to its description, populations now recognized as M. jacksoni were often misidentified as M. meandrites or treated as forms of that species.[1]
Description
[edit]Colonies of M. jacksoni are typically submassive to encrusting in growth form and can reach up to about 1 m in width. The coral’s valleys and septa resemble those of other Meandrina species but are generally smaller with thin septa that are regularly spaced and smooth. Colony color is usually pale cream or yellowish.[3]
Distribution and habitat
[edit]Meandrina jacksoni is found in reef environments throughout parts of the western Atlantic, including the Caribbean Sea, Bahamas, and South Florida. It typically inhabits shallow to moderate depths on reef slopes and other hard substrata.[4]
Similar species
[edit]This species can be confused with Meandrina meandrites (maze coral), but differs in growth form (more encrusting) and skeletal detail.[5]
Reproduction
[edit]The reproductive biology of Meandrina jacksoni has not been well documented in the scientific literature. Members of the genus Meandrina, including Meandrina meandrites, are known to reproduce via broadcast spawning, releasing gametes into the water column for external fertilization.[2]
However, variation in reproductive strategies occurs among Caribbean scleractinian corals, and further research is needed to determine whether M. jacksoni differs in its mode of reproduction.
Etymology
[edit]The specific epithet jacksoni honors marine biologist Jeremy B. C. Jackson for contributions to coral reef ecology.[2]
