Comment: The article cites an impressive amount of sources, but only a few discuss Ms. Tavini in detail. Additionally, while interviews are useful for sourcing the interviewee's own views, they are not considered independent sources. Ca talk to me! 08:37, 31 August 2025 (UTC)

Katie Tavini is a British mastering engineer based in Liverpool..[1]
Her work encompasses albums, EPs and singles across a range of genres.[2][3][4] She has mastered releases for artists including Los Bitchos, Bloc Party, Amber Run, Moonchild Sanelly, John Glacier, Maruja, Kate Nash, Rudimental and Nadine Shah[5]
Tavini has also contributed to music production education and industry advocacy through speaking engagements, mentoring initiatives and leadership roles within UK audio organisations, including the Music Producers Guild and the 2% Rising community.
Career
[edit]Tavini began her career in audio engineering at Limefield Studio in Manchester, where, under the mentorship of studio owner John Ellis (The Cinematic Orchestra) and producer Bill Leader, she gained experience in recording and mixing. She has credited Leader’s extensive experience as an engineer and producer as instrumental in shaping her early career.[6][7]
Tavini's transition into mastering began after being asked to master a release for Sonic Boom Six.[6][8] She later focused primarily on mastering, establishing an independent mastering practice.[9] According to Keychange, Tavini began working professionally in mastering in 2014 and has since become "one of the UK's most in-demand mastering engineers".[9]
Trade publications have highlighted Tavini's mastering work. MusicRadar has described Tavini as "a key figure in the mastering arena for over a decade"[5], noting credits with artists including Bloc Party, Rudimental, Ash, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Nadine Shah and Arlo Parks.[5] Mixdown included her among "the best mastering engineers you should know about"[10], describing her as an "industry leader".[10]
Tavini operates independently from her studio in Liverpool.[1][11][12] Her mastering work spans a wide range of genres, from indie and alternative rock to electronic and orchestral recordings[5][2][4][3], reflecting a client base that includes both emerging artists and established acts.[13][9]
In addition to her mastering work, Tavini has contributed to the audio industry press as a columnist for Audio Media International, where she has written about career development and studio practice in the industry.[14][15] She has also undertaken audio archival work as part of the British Library Sound Archive.[16]
Tavini has been active in education and public discussion of music production. She served as a co-chair and keynote speaker at the IASPM Music Production Education Conference 2020[17], and participated as a panelist at AIM’s Women in Music event on women in the studio.[18] She has also hosted a question-and-answer session with Mandy Parnell at the AES UK Mastering Conference[19] and contributed to BBC Music Introducing LIVE 2020: Masterclasses, where she was listed among the experts delivering sessions for emerging artists.[20][21]
Tavini has also contributed to initiatives within the UK music industry, having co-founded '2% Rising', a networking community established to support women and non-binary people in audio[9][22], described by NME as an "Alliance of female and non-binary studio talent, producers and songwriters helping women into the industry"[23]. She has also contributed to initiatives supporting women and gender minorities in audio and music production,[24][25][26][27] such as Red Bull Studios’ Normal Not Novelty programme.[28][29]
Tavini served as an executive director of the Music Producers Guild, a UK-based professional organisation representing producers, engineers and recording professionals[30], from December 2020 until September 2022.[31][32][33] During this period, the organisation reported initiatives focused on representation and accessibility within the recording industry, including increased board-level gender diversity,[34][35] scholarship and access programmes for underrepresented groups,[36] and industry advocacy relating to discrimination and working conditions in music production.[37][38]
In 2020, Tavini was appointed to the judging panel of the Oram Awards, an initiative by the PRS Foundation and the BBC New Audiences team, recognising women and gender-minority artists innovating in sound and music technology.[39][40]
Tavini has been recognised as part of Sound on Sound's "Change Makers" series, which highlights individuals contributing to greater representation, diversity and inclusion in the audio industry.[41] The series has been described as showcasing women and non-binary professionals bringing about change within the audio industry.[42]
Awards and recognition
[edit]Tavini has been nominated for 'Mastering Engineer of the Year' at the UK Music Producers Guild's awards on six occasions, with her most recent nomination in 2026:
- 2020 nominee[43]
- 2021 nominee[44]
- 2022 nominee[45]
- 2023 nominee[46]
