John R. Miles (born July 15, 1970) is an American author, podcaster, entrepreneur, and former United States Navy officer. He is the creator and host of the podcast Passion Struck and has written on topics including leadership, intentional living, personal development, and the concept of mattering. He is the author of Passion Struck: Twelve Powerful Principles to Unlock Your Purpose and Ignite Your Most Intentional Life (2024).
Miles served in the United States Navy before pursuing a career in business leadership. He later founded the Passion Struck media platform and podcast, which features discussions with authors, researchers, executives, physicians, athletes, and public figures on topics related to leadership, psychology, well-being, and human behavior.[1]
Early life and education
[edit]Miles attended the United States Naval Academy before serving as a commissioned officer in the United States Navy.[1]
Career
[edit]Following his military service, Miles worked in leadership positions in the technology and business sectors before transitioning into entrepreneurship, writing, and media.[1]
In 2021, he launched Passion Struck, a podcast and media platform focused on leadership, psychology, behavioral science, personal growth, and intentional living.[1]
The podcast features interviews with academics, entrepreneurs, authors, executives, physicians, athletes, and public figures. Through the platform, Miles has explored topics including purpose, resilience, workplace engagement, human behavior, and leadership development.
Miles is the author of Passion Struck: Twelve Powerful Principles to Unlock Your Purpose and Ignite Your Most Intentional Life (2024). In a 2024 article for Forbes, leadership writer Rodger Dean Duncan discussed themes from the book, including intentional living, mindset, purpose, and personal agency.[2]
Work on mattering
[edit]Much of Miles's published work focuses on the psychological concept of mattering, which concerns individuals' perceptions that they are valued and capable of making meaningful contributions to others and society.
Through his writing, podcast, and public speaking, Miles has discussed mattering in relation to leadership, workplace engagement, belonging, purpose, resilience, and well-being.
Miles has argued that a diminished sense of mattering can contribute to disengagement, burnout, and reduced well-being. He explores these themes in his forthcoming book The Mattering Effect: Creating a Life of Meaning and Worth, scheduled for publication in October 2026.
In a 2025 article published by Fortune, Miles's concept of "mattering erosion" was referenced in a discussion of executive burnout, workplace culture, and employee engagement.[3]
