Hermitcraft, also written as HermitCraft, is a invite-only survival multiplayer (SMP) Minecraft server and web series that is known for the large-scale builds and redstone projects that its members create.[1][2] Members, known as "Hermits", are also known to get involved in improvised storylines.[3]. Hermits also often build minigames on the server to play with each other.[2] Hermitcraft is known for it's family-friendly content.[1]
Originally starting in April 2012, Hermitcraft has had 10 vanilla seasons as of mid 2025, and it currently has 25 active members. Each of the Hermits of the server creates content chronicling their in-game building and antics, which they post to YouTube in an episodic format or live-stream on Twitch.
History
[edit]Inspired by the Mindcrack server created by Guude, YouTuber Generikb decided to create his own similar multiplayer server called Hermitcraft, and invited some of his friends to play along.[4] Season 1, thus began on 13 April, 2012.[5] Generikb left the group after about a year[4] when he was invited to Mindcrack, and Xisumavoid took over administrative server duties.[6]
Over time, Hermitcraft became known for the large-scale builds and redstone projects that it's members created.[1][2] Hermits also often build minigames on the server to play with each other.[2] Some Hermits also get involved in various improvised storylines, which grew in scale over time.[3]
Season 7 included a re-creation of the video game Among Us created by hermit TangoTek.[2]
Hermitcraft saw increased viewership during the COVID-19 pandemic.[6]
In Season 9, VintageBeef created a fully-playable trading card game on the server.[7] A physical edition of the trading card game was later made in response to many fan requests.[1] That same season, Joe Hills created a pinball table inspired by the James Webb Space Telescope.[8] During Season 9, Hermit TinfoilChef passed away in August of 2022.[9][10]
In February of 2024, Season 10 began with 27 hermits[5] as they brought in two new YouTubers; Smallishbeans and Skizzleman.[11][12] In November 2024, the hermits announced via Twitter that Iskall85 and Stressmonster101 had resigned from Hermitcraft.[13] It came out later that Iskall85 had left following a series of sexual harassment allegations from fans and staff.[14][15]
From 2025, the Minecraft server maps from seasons 8 and 9 have been made available for free on the official Minecraft: Bedrock Edition marketplace in collaboration with Mojang.[16][17]. A copy of the Season 10 world was also released in December 2025.
Seasons
[edit]Hermitcraft is divided into seasons based around the in-game world. At the beginning of each season, the Minecraft server is reset, and a new Minecraft world is created from a new world seed.[3] At the end of each season, the game worlds are made available for download on the official Hermitcraft website.[18]

Cultural impact
[edit]Hermitcraft creators often appear at official Minecraft events,[3] and one creator, Mumbo Jumbo, made a cameo appearance in A Minecraft Movie.[20]
Charitable efforts
[edit]On 23 October 2022, members of the Hermitcraft server hosted a live stream event, which was streamed on GoodTimesWithScar's Twitch channel, to raise money for the Gamers Outreach Foundation. The event raised more than its goal of $25,000 before the stream even officially began, and raised over $400,000 in total.[21][22] The money that the Hermits raised was used to fund the creation of over 100 portable game kiosks for hospitalized children. The kiosks were delivered to 25 different hospitals in the United States, Canada, and Australia.[23]
In April 2024, Hermitcraft held a second live stream event to raise money for the Gamers Outreach Foundation at their Gamers for Giving LAN party. This time, they raised over $840,000.[24]
In April 2025, Hermitcraft held a third live stream event for the Gamers Outreach Foundation at the Mojang Studios offices at the Microsoft campus in Redmond, Washington.[25] During the event, the Hermits raised over $820,000, including over $100,000 from an auction of Hermitcraft memorabilia.[26] On the second day of the event, it was announced that Hermitcraft member GoodTimesWithScar would join the Gamers Outreach Foundation's board of directors.[27]
In April 2026, Hermitcraft held a fourth live stream event of the Gamers Outreach Foundation, once again at the Mojang Studios offices at the Microsoft campus in Redmond, Washington. The stream raised over $1,000,000.[28]

Outside the server
[edit]Members of the Hermitcraft server occasionally collaborate with members of other servers, such as Empires SMP.[32] Many of the Hermits also participate in the Life Series, a collaborative Minecraft YouTube series run by YouTuber and Hermit Grian.[33]
