Erik Avakian is an American cybersecurity official and former musician who served as the Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania from 2010 to 2022.[1][2] During his tenure, he led cybersecurity strategy and risk management initiatives for Pennsylvania's executive branch agencies.[3]

Career

Avakian joined the Pennsylvania Office of Administration in 2005 and was appointed Chief Information Security Officer for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in 2010.[4] As state CISO, he oversaw cybersecurity operations, identity management initiatives, and statewide security modernization programs.[5]

He chaired the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency's State, Local, Tribal and Territorial Government Coordinating Council (SLTTGCC).[6]

Government Technology named Avakian to its "Top 25 Doers, Dreamers and Drivers" list in 2019 for his work on cybersecurity modernization and digital identity initiatives in Pennsylvania.[7]

Music career

Avakian was an early member of the rock band Fuel during the group's formative years in the 1990s.[8] He performed with the band under the name Fuel and contributed keyboards and backing vocals to the independent releases Porcelain and Fuel.[9]
