He is known for introducing sentinel lymph node biopsy and lymphatic mapping in the surgical management of breast cancer in Guatemala, as well as for his role in the development and implementation of oncoplastic breast surgery within the country’s public health system.[1]

Ralón is also the founder of the first specialized breast disease clinic within the Guatemalan public health sector in Guatemala City, contributing to improved access to diagnosis and multidisciplinary treatment for patients with breast diseases.[2]

Career

[edit]

Sentinel lymph node and breast cancer surgery

[edit]

Ralón was among the first surgeons in Guatemala to apply sentinel lymph node biopsy and lymphatic mapping techniques in breast cancer management. These procedures allow accurate axillary staging while reducing surgical morbidity associated with traditional axillary lymph node dissection.[3]

Oncoplastic breast surgery

[edit]

He contributed to the development and refinement of oncoplastic breast surgery in Guatemala, integrating oncologic safety with reconstructive principles to preserve breast aesthetics, particularly within public hospitals serving underserved populations.[2]

Public health work

[edit]

Ralón has worked extensively in Guatemala’s public health system, where he founded a dedicated breast disease clinic. His work has focused on improving early diagnosis, surgical outcomes, and access to specialized care for patients with breast cancer.[2]

Awards and recognition

[edit]
  • Banco Industrial Award for Outstanding Medical Professional, awarded for contributions to breast surgery and cancer care in Guatemala.[4]
  • Bantrab Award for Excellence in Public Health, recognizing his work with patients suffering from breast diseases in the public health system.[4]
