Ailurus Bio is a biotechnology company that develop biological programs[1], or "bioprograms", genetic codes that instruct biological processes and have been described as "living software".[2] The company has stated that it aims to "make biology a general‑purpose technology", "as easy to use as modern computers", and to develop "biocomputers" with standardized architectures and programming language.[3] The company's name refers to the red panda (genus Ailurus).
History
[edit]"Ailurus" was first used as a brand of Xunzhu Biotechnology Co., Ltd., a synthetic biology platform company, co‑founded by Haotian Guo and Jiang Shan in Shenzhen, China, in 2020.[4]
In October 2022, Cell published work by Guo and colleagues on TEARS, an RNA‑based system that forms liquid‑like compartments in bacteria that can act as organelle‑like scaffolds[5][6][7][8]. TEARS was first introduced as "RNA organelles" by Paris Bettencourt iGEM team led by Guo at INSERM and Center for Research and Interdisciplinarity in 2017, which was the first public record of liquid-liquid phase separation system in bacteria.[6]
Ailurus Bio Ltd was incorporated in the United Kingdom on 31 October 2022 as a separate legal entity,[9] is based in London,[10] and began by commercializing TEAR‑2, a development kit for phase separation.[7][8]
In 2024, the company announced PandaPure,[11][12] a system that enables protein purification with synthetic organelle, eliminating the need for chromatography or other resin-dependent methods.
Research
[edit]The company reports conducting research on phase separation[7][8], and design of new molecules. Building on earlier work in machine-learning guided evolution of antimicrobial peptides,[13][14] and AI‑designed anti‑CRISPR RNA,[15] the company also develops its capacity to support closed‑loop of wet‑lab data acquisition and AI‑assisted design.[16][17]
