AI Strike Team
[edit]The AI Strike Team is a Pittsburgh-based, public-private initiative created as a two-year effort to position Pittsburgh as the national Leader in AI by attracting investment and pursing AI infrastructure projects to help transform the region into a major AI technology hub by 2028
The organization hosts AI Horizons, an annual summit in Pittsburgh that brings together leaders from technology, [1]
Background and Founding
[edit]As Philips Respironics left its space in Bakery Square, Pittsburgh, it is noted that AI Strike Team Executive Director Joanna Doven simultaneously noted, "it was time [for the region] to pivot and think big," while a corridor in the region dubbed "AI Avenue," was quickly intensifying.[6] AI Avenue is reported to be a one-mile stretch in the Pittsburgh area that is home to the Duolingo Inc. headquarters, mixed-use campus of Bakery Square, which also serves as Google's Pittsburgh headquarters and the home of several tech startups.[7]
The AI Strike Team was subsequently formed as "a 24-month initiative focused on making strategic asks for the region," led by Doven and anchored by board members including Lovelace AI CEO Andrew Moore, an NVIDIA representative, and regional economic and political leaders.[8]
Since then, it has been reported that the AI Strike Team has expanded their board and become an initiative of Team Pennsylvania. New board members include Shiv Rao — CEO of Abridge, Toby Rice — President and CEO of EQT, Mike Keslar — President of BNY Pennsylvania, Michael Pohl — Google Pittsburgh Site Lead, Abby Smith — President and CEO of Team Pennsylvania, Martial Hebert — Dean of the School of Computer Science and former director of the Robotics Institute at Carnegie Mellon University, Rob Cherry — CEO of Partner4Work.[9]
Board and Leadership
[edit]Along with Doven, The Strike Team's Board following its initial launch included Lovelace AI CEO Andre Moore, an NVIDIA representative, and regional economic and political leaders. [2]
AI Horizons
[edit]To support their goal of positioning Pittsburgh to become a global leader in AI the Strike team hosts their summit AI Horizons that brings together leaders from business, academia, and government to explore the transformative effects of AI across industries in Bakery Square.[3] The summit took place for the first time in 2024.[4]At the summit, panels discuss potential for the Pittsburgh region to become an AI hub, and highlight systems such as robotics, simulation, and embedded AI.[5] Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, Senator David McCormick and BNY CEO Robin Vince include some of the speakers at the summit where the development and deployment of AI was discussed.[6][7][8]
At AI Horizons 2025, Governor Josh Shapiro announced the expansion of Pennsylvania's use of generative AI tools, making approved AI technologies available to qualified Commonwealth employees as part of the state's broader workforce modernization efforts.[9] Additional announcements at the summit included a $10 million investment by BNY to establish the BNY AI Lab at Carnegie Mellon University.[10]
