7 Little Words is a mobile and web-based word puzzle game developed and published by the American studio Blue Ox Family Games, Inc. Originally released in 2011 for iOS and Android devices, the game combines elements of crosswords, word searches, and anagrams.
In addition to its digital versions, the puzzle is syndicated in print format across more than 200 newspapers.
Gameplay
[edit]Each daily puzzle consists of seven text-based clues alongside 20 tiles containing combinations of two to four letters. Players must solve the clues by selecting and combining the correct letter tiles to form the answers. The numbers to the far right of each clue indicate the length of the required word.
The game offers various difficulty levels and has expanded to include additional puzzle variants on its platform, such as Red Herring, Monkey Wrench, Tiny Little Crosswords, Woven Words and Hootle.
History and Reception
[edit]7 Little Words was created by Christopher York, chief game designer and CEO of Blue Ox Family Games. Following its digital launch, the game reached five million downloads by 2012 and has since had millions of more downloads worldwide.
In September 2011, 7 Little Words was featured in "O, The Oprah Magazine" as a recommended mobile application for brain exercise[1]. In April 2013, Andrews McMeel Publishing released a physical book adaptation of the game titled 7 Little Words Book 1: 100 Puzzles[2]. Also in 2013, 7 Little Words was recognized in the 1st Annual Best App Ever Awards - Android from bestappever.com (now 148apps.com) by being awarded 2nd place for Best Brain and Puzzle Game - Android Division[3]. In the 6th Annual Best App Ever Awards - iOS from bestappever.com (now 148apps.com), 7 Little Words was recognized by being awarded 3rd place for Best Word Game - iOS Division[4].
By 2026, the game had been adapted for web browsers and newspaper syndication. It received generally positive reviews from mobile gaming publications upon release, with critics noting its minimalist interface and accessibility.
