Paid parental leave - negotiate?

Paid parental leave - negotiate?

Has anyone had success negotiating paid parental leave? I am at a small-medium firm, contract says we ‘may’ be paid in accordance with the firms policies. But I have been told there is no policy and I won’t be paid a dime lol. To me, ‘may’ seems discretionary (which is dodgy as imo) but leaves me wondering if there is any point trying to negotiate. For completeness, I know there is no requirement to $ just wondering if anyone has had a similar situation & has tried to negotiate?

Current or threatened legal proceedings

It is strongly advised that you not post details of cases and any unique facts in relation to those cases that are being (or are likely to be) litigated and that may lead to your identity becoming known. Dodgy legal theories

PLEASE DO NOT post links or advocate the use of pseudo-legal theories known as "Freeman on the land" or its various Australian incarnations, and promoted by David Icke, Max Igan and the like. Such links or posts will be removed and the moderators may impose bans if the circumstances warrant it. For a comprehensive review of these arguments and why they're wrong, see Meads v Meads [2012] ABQB 571.

Don't be a dickhead

Be polite in this subreddit and try to treat all users with respect. Don't go off on political rants. Anti-vaxx nonsense is banned. The mods may hand out bans for breaches of the 'no dickhead' rule.

No legal advice given

This includes requests for, and provision of, legal advice. Free legal advice from strangers on the Internet is worth what you pay for it. Mods will generally lock or remove threads or comments soliciting or offering legal advice.

This is not just about professional obligations - it’s about protecting people from bad advice.

Referrals to other subreddits that purport to give legal advice are liable for removal and the posters banned.

Keep discussion in dedicated threads

We have a careers, students and clerkships thread and a Friday Drinks Thread for a reason. As long as someone remembers to charge the rant bot, the Wednesday Rant Thread also exists for a reason.

Be polite

Users are expected to be civil to one another. If you act like a dickhead, your comment is liable for removal and temporary bans may issue. If you demonstrate yourself, by your conduct, to be a dickhead, you will be permabanned. Dickhead behaviour includes, but is not limited to:

Trolling/harassment of users
Ad hominem
Belittling others for their race, sex, gender, or religion
Being unnecessarily hostile (including where users have sought legal advice contrary to sub rules)

In particular, the “Sovereign Citizen” or “Free Man On The Land” nonsense, or whatever Pete Evans happens to be spruiking this week. While we are not averse to mocking dodgy legal theories, please keep in mind this isn’t r/shitsovcitssay. Posts and comments must be on topic

Save for general discussion threads such as the regular Friday Drinks Thread, all posts and comments must relate to Australian law or matters of general legal interest. Attempts to derail on-topic posts with off-topic discussions and rants will be dealt with in the moderators' discretion.

We are not here to do your homework

We don’t mind helping you out if you get stuck, but we’re not going to facilitate academic misconduct by answering your hypothetical, verbatim from your take home exam. If you have a crack at it first, and show your work, when you ask for help, you might get a warmer reception.

Threads posing “homework” questions that have been spammed to other law-themed subs are liable for removal.

Before you ask a question, try running a search to see if it’s already been answered.

We have a zero tolerance policy for anti-vaxx nonsense or posts containing misinformation about covid-19. We may ban you without notice if you breach this rule.

Do not breach court orders, including suppression orders

If a court makes an order which prohibits the publication of information about a case or investigation, including an order suppressing the identity of a person involved, you are not allowed to make a post or comment in this subreddit which confirms or speculates on the identity of that person or the content of suppressed information.

We aren’t a dumping ground for your LinkedIn blog that’s not getting any views. We’re looking at you, user who has never participated in discussion before and is suddenly posting links to obscure articles.

We generally don’t mind links to surveys for academic research - we just ask that you run it past the mods, first.

We appreciate that the law and politics often intersect. However, the purpose of this subreddit is to discuss the law and legal policy. We do not want political opinions or discussion. Please focus on the law and keep your political opinions out of it.
