Proposed source for [citation needed] tags in "Generative engine optimization" section
[edit]The two sentences in the GEO/AEO paragraph currently tagged with [citation needed] could be supported by this Search Engine Land article: SEO vs. AI search: 101 questions that keep me up at night (Nov 2025). The piece covers the ongoing industry debate around whether AEO/GEO constitutes a distinct discipline from SEO, including technical differences like retrieval-augmented generation, reranking pipelines, and probabilistic citation selection in LLMs. It's published on a WP:RS-compliant trade publication. Happy to hear thoughts before adding it as a ref. Mhd7music (talk) 13:12, 24 March 2026 (UTC)
- This article is semi-protected so you wouldn't be able to make that edit. I think you could find a better article than the one you linked to. Most of that piece is just a list of questions. Dflovett (talk) 00:53, 26 March 2026 (UTC)
- I have rewritten this section to add sourcing. The section content had jumped straight into terminology without establishing the relationship the title promises, so I tried to introduce that aspect. The word "promotable", attributed to a Search Engine Land citation, does not appear in that source and is non-neutral marketing language, so I reworded it to match the sources. The redundant final sentence has been removed and replaced with a sourced description of GEO practice. Please feel free to change any aspects you believe to be not appropriate. Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the visibility and ranking of a website or web page in search engine results pages (SERPs). SEO aims to increase organic (non-paid) traffic by making websites more relevant and authoritative in response to user search queries. History SEO emerged in the mid-1990s with the growth of early search engines such as Yahoo!, AltaVista, and later Google. As search engines developed more complex ranking algorithms, SEO practices evolved to focus on content quality, user experience, and technical performance rather than keyword repetition. Types of SEO 1. On-Page SEO On-page SEO refers to optimization techniques applied directly within a website. This includes keyword optimization, meta tags, headings, content quality, internal linking, and image optimization. 2. Off-Page SEO Off-page SEO involves activities conducted outside the website to improve its authority and reputation. These include backlink building, social media marketing, brand mentions, and digital public relations. 3. Technical SEO Technical SEO focuses on improving the technical aspects of a website, such as website speed, mobile responsiveness, site architecture, structured data, and crawlability. 4. AI SEO AI SEO is the use of artificial intelligence tools to improve search engine optimization by automation tasks like keyword research , content creation and optimization. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mehranseecs (talk • contribs) 09:10, 25 April 2026 (UTC) Key Elements of SEO Keyword research Content creation Link building Mobile optimization Page speed optimization User experience (UX) Search engine algorithms Search Engine Algorithms Search engines use complex algorithms to rank web pages. [edit]The "SEO Optimization" section needs a citation, explains what "GEO" is twice and generally reads like an advertisement for it. I'd love to take another crack at it: reduce it to one paragraph, neutralize the term, add a citation, only mention GEO once, etc. Breakageanonymous (talk) 19:47, 1 April 2026 (UTC)
- You can make an WP:EDITREQUEST. OhNoitsJamie Talk 20:49, 1 April 2026 (UTC)
- I don't see an "SEO Optimization" section. What are you referring to? Dflovett (talk) 02:45, 4 June 2026 (UTC)
Suggested update: Image search optimization and image metadata
[edit]The article currently mentions that SEO applies to image search, but the Methods section does not explain image search optimization in detail. I suggest adding a short neutral paragraph to the "Methods" section, preferably under "Increasing prominence".
Proposed paragraph:
"Image search optimization involves improving the discoverability of images in search engines through descriptive filenames, alt text, captions, surrounding page context, structured data, and image sitemaps. Search engines may also use image license metadata, including structured data and IPTC photo metadata, to display rights and licensing information in image search results. Unlike page-level structured data, IPTC photo metadata is embedded in the image file itself and can remain with the image as it is reused across pages."

Proposal to update "White hat versus black hat" section
[edit]Hello, I've noticed that the "White hat versus black hat" section is currently tagged as needing an update to reflect recent industry developments.
As the search landscape has shifted significantly in recent months, I suggest we refine the definitions to better align with current industry standards, particularly regarding how search engines now treat AI-integrated search and evolving content quality guidelines.
I have access to reliable industry reports that provide updated context on these methods. Before I propose specific changes, I would appreciate input from other editors on whether we should focus on updating the definitions or expanding the section to include more contemporary examples of search engine enforcement. Thanks. Syedsheraz052 (talk) 08:00, 17 June 2026 (UTC)
- It would be best to propose specific material here on the talk page first, using reliable sources, and to steer away from any "examples" that may be interpreted as promotional. Sources would need to be verifiable and accessable. Sam Kuru (talk) 10:52, 17 June 2026 (UTC)
