:I nominate User SNAAAAKE to be Editor of the Week for his work in finding/adding images and expanding multiple articles for topics related to the Arthurian legend. Following is a small sampling of his work: [https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Morgan_le_Fay&action=history Morgan le Fay], [https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Paimpont_forest&action=history Paimpont forest], [https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Brocéliande&action=history Brocéliande]. What I believe sets this editor apart is self-reformation after he experienced some tough times that led him down a wayward path. He was given chance after chance, and time-off for self-reflection. With a bit of guidance, he has realized the error of his ways and vowed to not repeat them. As a result, he was given the opportunity to make a comeback, and is demonstrating that one more chance truly can bring positive results. He is producing quality work in what is clearly a labor of love for him. He has not disappointed those of us who saw his potential to be an asset for the community. He has clearly demonstrated that he is here to help build the encyclopedia, and he’s doing an excellent job of it.

Post of understanding

Alex Shih, I have agreed to the mentorship proposal offered to me by Atsme and I am very grateful and willing to accept her offer. I believe her guidance will prove beneficial in helping me be a productive contributor since I have learned from my past mistakes to avoid them in the future. Thank you both for giving me the opportunity to present my pledge to you to be a productive editor while maintaining a collaborative editing environment. SNAAAAKE!! (talk) 06:43, 6 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

SNAAAAKE!!, I am really glad to hear that. When Atsme feel that you are ready, I will be more than happy to assess whether or not this community is ready also. Best, Alex Shih (talk) 07:09, 6 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

About unblocking

SNAAAAKE!!, would you mind to submit a unblock request so I can review it openly for the sake of transparency and discuss it with other administrators if necessary? Many thanks, Alex Shih (talk) 14:55, 6 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, sure.

I was asked to do this formally, so I did.

Only one open unblock request is needed at a time. SQLQuery me! 12:32, 10 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

If you want to make any further unblock requests, please read the guide to appealing blocks first, then use the {{unblock}} template again. I’m thinking Alex meant for you to actually present your reason for wanting to be unblocked, etc. Atsme📞📧 13:10, 7 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, like Atsme said. Please write a full reason so I can respond publicly here. As this does not appear to be a community sanction, we can resolve this here in this talk page (along with ideally some inputs from a few other administrators that regularly patrols unblock requests). Request reason:

I am requesting the removal of my block as follows: I have agreed to the mentorship proposal offered to me by Atsme and willing to accept the offer if I am allowed to return to editing. I fully understand why my prior conduct has been unacceptable, I have learned from my past mistakes and will not repeat them. Thank you for considering my request.

Accept reason:

I am unblocking this account based on the conditions that I have proposed, which includes 1) 1RR 2) One account 3) Civility restriction. Rest of the details are in the discussion below. Alex Shih (talk) 16:33, 14 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Full disclosure for these who care, and coming just from me (you really don't need to read any of this):

Thank you for posting this, SNAAAAKE!!. I will leave this unblock request open for at least 24 hours to see if any other administrators would like to chime in, but I am leaning toward accept as good reasons have been given, and that you have recognised your past mistakes (mostly to do with temperament as far as I can see) and have agreed to follow community customs by not repeating these same editing behaviours. Even if one were to consider the IP editing back in November 2017, I did not see any intention to deceive, so I would have not considered it as a factor to not unblock. I would like to think this is a classic case of rope (it has been more than two years), and unblocking this account would be a net positive to the project. Regards, Alex Shih (talk) 16:23, 10 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I think, at the very least, PresN should be consulted as the blocking admin. NinjaRobotPirate (talk) 18:49, 10 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, NinjaRobotPirate, but I wasn't sure if PresN wanted to participate in SNAAAAKE!!'s unblock request after reading their previous post above this talk page back in December 2017, that's the reason why I did not ping. Alex Shih (talk) 19:02, 10 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I'm abstaining. Snaaaake has been blocked 15+ times over multiple names, but the real saga ended 4 years ago, and the last 6 months have just been trying to get them to actually post a cogent unblock message. I'm not interested in reaffirming their belief that I'm a boogieman who is out to block them, and apparently there are several people who want them to come back. It's been long enough that I'm uninterested in revisiting the matter. If they break the rules again, they can be blocked again- I'm not getting involved. --PresN 19:16, 10 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • @Alex Shih: I understand that Atsme has volunteered to be a mentor here, but she is not an admin. Would it be safe to assume you would also be closely following this user’s activities were they to be unblocked? I’m a big supporter of second chances, but 16th chances make me a bit more skeptical... Beeblebrox (talk) 23:10, 10 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
    • @Beeblebrox: Thank you for weighing in. Yes, if it makes any difference I would also follow the user's activities closely. I disagree that this should be treated as 16th chance, as PresN noted "the real saga ended 4 years ago", and I am not seeing the same belligerency anymore. I think unblock with the following conditions (1RR, one account, civility restriction) should be fair; a closer look at their openly declared IP contribution page indicates to me that they are here to contribute to the project, but struggles to communicate well, in which I hope the mentorship of Atsme would help. I am optimistic that Snaaaake!! can turn out to be constructive editor again, hopefully similar to this case. If not, then like PresN said, they can be blocked again. Alex Shih (talk) 00:19, 11 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thank for your reply. Beeblebrox (talk) 01:56, 11 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I was thinking of opposing the unblock but I can see now that 1RR, one account and civility restriction have been already proposed and they will most likely reduce the potential chances of the past misconduct. I am fine with unblock on this account. OccultZone (TalkContributionsLog) 16:49, 11 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I hope the conditions will be preventative. Snaaaake!!, when you have time, could you take a look at the unblock conditions that I have proposed? If you can agree with them, I will go ahead and unblock your account. Thanks, Alex Shih (talk) 06:25, 13 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Sure. It wasn't horrible, thanks everyone. SNAAAAKE!! (talk) 08:01, 13 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

ALso, I can restore the "bold" one just below, can I? Rewrote it a bit:

Well it's difficult for me to assess without diffs to compare changes. Feel free to be bold and edit the article directly. Alex Shih (talk) 16:33, 14 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Unblocked

Hi Snaaaake!!, I have unblocked your account per this user talk page discussion, based on the unblock conditions proposed above. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me at anytime. If you ever feel stressed or run into problems with other editors, you can also feel free to reach out to me too when Atsme is not available. +1, Alex. I think he is returning to us with great potential to be an outstanding contributor of quality content. SNAAAAKE, is the collapsed content a new article? Question

Will you take a look at Tank controls and tell me what you think? Does the article accurately represent the device according to the sources? Atsme📞📧 19:47, 14 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, it's a very simple concept. How to enable automatic preview for the article links? It used to be on the bottom. SNAAAAKE!! (talk) 19:51, 14 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

And by this I mean these pop-up preview windows. Btw I did publish Sebile and Nine sorceresses that I've been working on. SNAAAAKE!! (talk) 10:04, 15 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, I do, but my tablet's broken right now (for years). Also learnt some rather basic graphic design. And as for "Navigation popups" - it's the single most useful thing anywhere here and should be activated for everyone by default. SNAAAAKE!! (talk) 06:22, 16 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I'm so glad to see you return successfully, I've missed you! I'm amazed already at your amazing new articles Nine sorceresses and Sebile, which are critical elements of the often-overlooked feminine perspectives of the Arthurian legend. ^_^ Ben · Salvidrim!  03:11, 16 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I agree, nice work on those articles. I don't know anything about Arthurian legend but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't impressed. sixtynine • whaddya want? • 12:20, 17 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Terry Bogard

I see you found a lot of information about Mai Shiranui's creation so I've been wondering if you also had information about Terry Bogard or Geese Howard. Creation information is what they lack the most. Regards.Tintor2 (talk) 00:07, 18 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I'd do but I'm not very interested. I'd be more about Andy but there isn't much really (Terry yes). I'll do Siegfried instead. SNAAAAKE!! (talk) 00:17, 18 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Well, one thing only: Terry's been doing a load of guest appearances in the last decade or so. He and Kyo both, actually. If you check Mai's article there's a very good chance they're also in, likely even in the citation articles. I swear SNK's surviving on licensing them, and Yuri too for that matter. SNAAAAKE!! (talk) 00:27, 18 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, in the Soulcalibur character list I gathered as many possible sources for Siegfried should somebody want to create the article.Tintor2 (talk) 01:15, 18 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Listicles & verbosity

Hi, welcome back. In the spirit of new beginnings, Wikipedia's tone has changed over time and we try to avoid Reception sections that list mentions of fictional characters indiscriminately. As a general encyclopedia, we write for a general readership. For example, in your rewrite mentioned above,

The character has been critically acclaimed.[1][2] GameSpot included the Master among the ten best computer game villains for being "one of the most memorable antagonists in computer-gaming history,"[3] and further chose him as one of the 64 characters competing in their 2010 poll Greatest Video Game Villain that included console gaming characters and in which he has won directly in the first two rounds of eliminations against Kain and Heihachi Mishima before losing to Bowser.[4] GamesRadar too praised the Master's role as an antagonist, putting him in their 2013 list of the best villains in video games at number 75.[5] In 2018, Kotaku also called him "one of the greatest villains in video game history"[6] while PC Gamer included him on their list of the best boss fights in PC gaming.[7]

Instead of shuffling these claims in a rewrite, ask what the source actually imparts by ranking a character #X of Y with no futher info, and why that fact matters to a general reader. They can be paraphrased. The general assertion above that the character is "among the best video game villains" could be written as a single line with multiple refs without losing any extra detail. If the source has something important to say about the character, paraphrase the importance instead of relying on direct quotes.

In another example:

GamerFitnation speculated on how Jade ("The Emerald Assassin") would fare in a matchup against UFC fighter Ronda Rousey after Rousey successfully defended her UFC Women's Bantamweight Championship title.[1]

Refs like this aren't useful for our general audience for several reasons: (1) They're low-quality. The ref barely even gestures at the sourced information having any consequence. In general, Wikipedia isn't a place to aggregate the assertions of listicles, especially in this case, as if the author was actually making some credible claim about the fictional character and the real MMA fighter? (2) It adds nothing to the article. A general audience wouldn't know what to do with this hypothetical non sequitur in the middle of a Reception section, and similarly, sections filled with these sorts of unrelated sentences are hard/convoluted for other editors to maintain. (3) GamerFitnation was never a reliable source—it has no hallmarks of editorial quality or pedigree and no reputation for fact-checking. It's a hobbyist blog and even today it's a front for spyware. There is no feasible reason why this ref would be considered pertinent for an encyclopedia article, nevertheless to resuscitate from an archived URL. These facts should be fairly self-evident to an editor with your experience, so please remove such claims rather than making them more prominent in the article.

Later in that same edit, a source is quoted at length. Quotes and copyvio should be minimized by putting the author's thoughts in our own words.

Regardless of where the content originated, please edit for a general audience by focusing on the subject's general background and importance. There are other wikis that specialize in aggregating factoids about fictional characters, if you want to preserve specialist information somewhere more appropriate. czar 21:53, 19 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

It wasn't even me who wrote about Ronda etc. SNAAAAKE!! (talk) 21:59, 19 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
? Did you not just rewrite those articles and keep that content? I even said "Regardless of where the content originated". I could pull examples from sections you've written in the past—or recently?—but that's not the point. My request is that you mind these suggestions in future edits. czar 22:07, 19 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I really only kept that Ronda thing (shortened) because I've seen it added by someone whom I respect so I presumed it does make sense somehow, even if I thought it's oddly random and pretty stupid without checking the article of which I'm still not interested. Anyway thanks for hot tips (I actually did read) but please don't follow me around. SNAAAAKE!! (talk) 22:40, 19 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Czar: *raises hand* The Ronda thing was my fault. After reading this I went to remove it but someone already beat me to the punch. #seemedlikeagoodideaatthetime sixtynine • whaddya want? • 17:28, 21 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Is there a way to autotranslate articles but complete with formatting?

Only way I know to do it would be Google translate. I copied the lead in edit mode, entered it in GT and translated to Spanish:

En leyenda artúrica, el 'Val sans Retour' (Valle o Valle del No Retorno) es una tierra encantada en la que la poderosa hechicera Morgan le Fay encarcela a sus amantes. El hechizo finalmente se rompe con Lancelot. El Val sans Retour ha sido identificado con un área del mismo nombre en bosque de Paimpont en Bretaña, al suroeste de Rennes, tradición que durante mucho tiempo ha sido el sitio del legendario bosque de Brocéliande. As evidenced, there are some issues with translating code, but it could be that when it's added to the relative language WP, it will understand the translated code whereas Eng doesn't. You may need to get help from someone who speaks the language you want translated. Atsme📞📧 01:37, 2 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

There's supposedly this tool: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:ContentTranslation?title=Special:ContentTranslation&campaign=contributions-page&page=Broc%C3%A9liande&from=fr&to=en&targettitle=Broc%C3%A9liande&version=1 which literally doesn't work at all. Well, I'll be just translating it manually. First the legendary forest, then the real forest, and the Val eventually. --SNAAAAKE!! (talk) 07:30, 2 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Edit summaries, multiple consecutive edits

Once again, regarding edit summaries and editing practices:

  • Please make a habit of providing an edit summary when you make a change to an article. Doing so makes it easier for your colleagues here to understand the intention of your edit.
  • Plus, it will be easier for you and your co-editors to collaborate on articles if, instead of making multiple consecutive edits in rapid succession on an article, you use the "Show preview" button to view your changes incrementally before finally saving the page once you're satisfied with your edits. This keeps the page history of the article less cluttered. Thanks in advance for considering these suggestions. Eric talk 01:42, 2 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Meh, Eric is correct. Although over the years I've noticed different editors work differently, and your editing style is not particularly unusual. But it would be nice indeed if you can adapt the best practice. May I ask if you are editing from computer or tablet? Cheers! Alex Shih (talk) 15:55, 4 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Brocéliande, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Anglo-Norman (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver).

Editor of the Week

Editor of the Week
Your ongoing efforts to improve the encyclopedia have not gone unnoticed: You have been selected as Editor of the Week in recognition of your work with Arthurian legend pages. Thank you for the great contributions! (courtesy of the Wikipedia Editor Retention Project)

User:Atsme submitted the following nomination for Editor of the Week:

I nominate User SNAAAAKE to be Editor of the Week for his work in finding/adding images and expanding multiple articles for topics related to the Arthurian legend. Following is a small sampling of his work: Morgan le Fay, Paimpont forest, Brocéliande.
