Jeni Magaña is a Mexican-American multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter, experimental musician, and photographer[1][2] based in Los Angeles, USA.[3] She releases solo music as Magana,[4] and is one-half of the pen pin duo with Emily Moore.[5][6][7] Magaña also currently performs and records with Mitski,[8][9][10] and has previously worked with Lady Lamb[11] and Laura Cortese & The Dance Cards.[12]

Early life

Jeni Magaña was born in Bakersfield, California.[13][14] She relocated to Boston, Massachusetts to study music at Berklee College.[15][16]

Career

Multi-Instrumentalist (2007–present)

As a multi-instrumentalist, Magaña has recorded and toured with a range of artists. While earning her degree at Berklee,[17] she contributed double bass to The Meanest of Times, a 2007 studio album by Dropkick Murphys.[18][19][20]

She has written, recorded, and toured with artists including Laura Cortese and The Dance Cards,[12][21][22] Annie and The Beekeepers,[23][24] Pigeon Club,[25][26] and has also toured with Lady Lamb.[27][11][28]

Magaña is currently part of Mitski's touring lineup, where she has contributed bass, keyboards, and backing vocals.[29][30][31] Her performances have included a 2018 The Current studio session,[32] as well as in appearances at Boston Calling Music Festival 2019,[33] Glastonbury Festival 2022,[34] and on the Jimmy Kimmel Live! television show.[35][36][37]

Whilst touring with Mitski, Magaña has also worked as a photographer, shooting for the 2022 L'Officiel campaign,[1][38] and the behind-the-scenes video for the ‘’Stay Soft’’ music video.[39][40] Magaña also contributed double bass to Mitski's “Buffalo Replaced / Coyote, My Little Brother“ for the Spotify Singles series.[41][42][43]

In 2025, toured as bassist, clarinetist and backing vocalist for Tim Minchin.[44][45]

Solo works as Magana (2016–present)

After relocating to Brooklyn, New York, Magaña began releasing solo material under the name Magana. She signed to the Audio Antihero label,[46] who released her debut solo single ‘’Get It Right’’ in September 26, 2016.[47][48][49]

The Golden Tongue EP was released in October 28, 2016.[50][4][51] She followed her debut EP with the standalone ‘’Pages’’ single on January 20, 2017.[52][53][54]

In July 2017, after relocating to Los Angeles, California, Magaña collaborated with director Lauren Finerman on a music video for ‘’Inches Apart,’’ a song from the Golden Tongue EP.[55][56][57] "Inches Apart" was re-released as a single[58][59][60] with remixes from Frog and Benjamin Shaw.[61][62]

Magana continued to issue singles,[63][64] and appear on compilations,[65][66][67] before self-releasing Breathing[13] and You Are Not a Morning Person in 2020, the latter of which was re-issued by Beanie Tapes label the following year.[15][68]

Magana returned on March 25, 2024 with the Teeth album.[69][70][71] The album was co-released through Audio Antihero and her own Colored Pencils imprint. [13][72][3]

On October 4, 2024, Magana issued DREAMS, a multimedia ambient music dream diary and photography book, via Hand Drawn Hand.[73][74][75]

On January 23, 2025, Magana premiered the Bad News EP via The Alternative[76] before a release the following day through Audio Antihero.[77][78][79] which was announced as the final entry in her "Teeth trilogy."[80][81][82]
